DIASTASIS RECTI

What is Diastasis Recti?
Diastasis recti occurs during pregnancy when the connective tissue called the Linea alba (which holds the abdominal muscles together) thins, causing a separation between the muscles. This can lead to a visible bulging especially with exercise and lifting.
What are the Symptoms of Diastasis Recti?
● A visible bulge or gap in your abdomen when you sit up or perform certain movements
● Persistent lower back pain or pelvic discomfort
● Difficulty lifting, bending, or performing basic movements
● A feeling of weakness or pressure in your core, especially when engaging in physical
activity
Why Should You Care About Diastasis Recti?
● Core Weakness: This separation can leave your core muscles weaker, which can lead
to low back pain and instability.
● Difficulty Returning to Activity: It can affect your ability to safely return to higher-
impact activities like running, jumping, and lifting without risking injury.
● Functional Impact: Without addressing it, diastasis recti can limit your movement and strength, impacting your everyday activities and physical performance.
Do I have Diastasis Recti?
Diastasis recti is easy to check for on your own! Here’s how:
1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.
2. Place your fingers above your belly button
3. Crunch up slightly and feel with your fingers to check for a separation between your
abdominal muscles
4. Check above, at, and below your belly button to see if it is wider or narrower in certain
areas
5. If you feel a gap that is about two fingers wide (or more), this could be a sign of diastasis recti.
If you suspect you have diastasis recti, it’s important to get a professional evaluation. A trained physical therapist can help assess the severity of the separation and create a plan to narrow the gap and restore your core function.
